Umm… God, Are You Sure You Picked the Right Person?

Have you ever felt like God was asking you to do something huge, and your first thought was, “No way, that’s not for me”? I know I have. There have been so many moments when I wanted to just say, “God, please send someone else.”

Moses’ “Please Send Someone Else” Moment

So, Moses was just doing his quiet shepherd thing when out of nowhere, a bush caught on fire but didn’t burn up . And then, out of that unbelievable moment, God speaks to him: "Moses, I’m sending you to Pharaoh to set my people free."

Instead of feeling honored, Moses immediately started listing every excuse he could muster:

  • Who am I to do this? (Exodus 3:11)

  • What if they don’t believe me? (Exodus 4:1)

  • I’m not good at public speaking! (Exodus 4:10)

  • Actually… can you send someone else? (Exodus 4:13)

Moses was completely overwhelmed by his own doubts, and honestly, I get it. We all have those moments when fear takes over.

I remember the night before I was supposed to lead my first life group at church. I sat alone in my living room, Bible open in front of me, and this tidal wave of anxiety just hit me out of nowhere. I kept thinking, “Who am I to lead others in worship? What if my words just fall flat and no one connects with what I’m saying?” I even ended up scribbling down every excuse I could think of. Then I took a deep breath, prayed for strength (and maybe a little bit of courage), and reread Moses’ story. That’s when I felt this quiet little assurance whispering, “God will be with you.” When the day came, my hands were shaking and my voice wavered a bit at first. But as I got into it, I felt this unexpected calm wash over me. It wasn’t about me shining; it was about letting God’s message come through, imperfections and all. That Bible study wasn’t just another meeting - it was a turning point for me.

There was also this time at work when I was handed a major project that made my heart race. I kept thinking, “I’m too inexperienced for this,” and honestly, I seriously doubted myself. After a really rough day, I sat at my desk, stared out the window for a bit (and maybe doodled a little), and prayed for guidance. I remembered Moses and all those times God answered his excuses with a promise to be there. So, I decided to push through the fear, even though I wasn’t 100% sure what I was doing. Sure, I made a few mistakes, learned on the fly, and felt like I was barely keeping up some days. But looking back I know, I had not only gained confidence, but I also discovered strengths I never even knew I had. It taught me that sometimes, God equips us with exactly what we need - even when we’re convinced we’re not enough.

For Every Excuse, God Has an Answer

It’s kind of crazy how our excuses can mirror Moses’ own hesitations. When I’m overwhelmed by doubt, I try to remind myself of these promises:

My Excuse: I’m not qualified.

God’s Response: I will be with you. (Exodus 3:12)

My Excuse: What if nobody believes me?

God’s Response: I’ll provide what you need to show my power. (Exodus 4:2-9)

My Excuse: I’m not a great speaker.

God’s Response: I made your mouth—I'll help you speak. (Exodus 4:11-12)

My Excuse: Please send someone else.

God’s Response: You’re the one I’ve chosen. (Exodus 4:14-16)

God wasn’t upset when Moses had questions or expressed doubts; He only got frustrated when Moses flat-out refused to step up. And honestly, I’ve seen that same pattern in my life, but God meets us right in the middle of our fears.

Maybe you’re standing at the edge of something new, feeling just as hesitant as I did. Whether it’s leading a group, starting a new job, or simply sharing your story, those fears and doubts are totally real. I’ve been there, questioning if I’m ever enough, if I can measure up. But every time I’ve taken a step of faith, I’ve learned that God doesn’t call the perfect person; He calls the willing one.

So next time you feel like saying, “God, please send someone else,” maybe try whispering, “I’m scared, but if You’re with me, let’s do this.” Because if God could use Moses - a hesitant shepherd in His plans, He can definitely use you too.

Remember, every step you take in faith - even the small, shaky ones, brings you closer to the breakthrough you’re meant to experience.
